GLOUCESTER — Daniel D. Saunders, 86, passed away peacefully from Parkinson's disease on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 in Clearwater, Fla., surrounded by his loving family.
He was born and raised in Gloucester, the son of late Daniel D. Saunders and Elizabeth (McFarlane).
After his 1942 graduation from Gloucester High School, he served as a combat engineer in France during World War II. After completing his service, he worked for the A&P Tea Company in Gloucester and completed his AA degree in Accounting at Salem Commercial School. He was employed by CBS Hytron in Danvers and for many years at the United Shoe Machinery Corp in Beverly.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara (Spittle) of Oldsmar, Fla. and children, Daniel W. (Marie) of Chicago, Faye of Palo Alto, Calif., Mark (Beverly) of Gloucester, and Scott (Charlotte) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; as well as grandchildren, Amy Saunders, Chloe and Schuyler Linn, Colleen Saunders, Robin Fortado.
His children will remember him as a loving and caring father who loved boating, golfing and playing bridge as well as many fond memories of exploring the New England coast especially around Cape Ann on their dad's boat. His grandchildren had great fun visiting West Wharf in their summer apartment, watching the boat traffic with him
